Founded in 1887 - dissolved in 1892
(Antwerp 1887 - Antwerp 1892)
Antwerp artistic association. Founded in the cafe Le Frison (Anneessensstraat, Antwerp)
The aim was to decentralize the wave of innovation from Brussels (Les XX). L'Art Indépendant set up only one salon, namely in 1887 in the Center for Industry, Art and Trade in Antwerp.
Attempts to organize a new exhibition the following year, failed to meet the opposition of the director of the Center for Industry and the Antwerp city council. Because of this and the unusually violent reactions of the Antwerp press, the initial impetus was lost.
However, the urge to break through the rigidity and the demand for more personality and a more deeply felt life persisted and resulted in the foundation of L'Association pour l'Art in 1892.
