Founded in 1898
The Berlin Secession was an art association founded by Berlin artists. It became an alternative to the conservative, state-run Association of Berlin Artists. The artists of the Berlin Secession felt misunderstood, but wanted to show their work in public. This also provided a platform for experiments and innovation. The art within the Berlin Secession was derived from Impressionism. However, a split followed by Expressionists, who founded the Neue Secession in 1910 and the Freie Secession in 1914. Therefore, the role of the Berliner Secession diminished and was soon played out at the end of the First World War.
