Droog is a design foundation, well-known design label and one of the best-known names within Dutch Design. Droog was founded in 1993 by Renny Ramakers and Gijs Bakker. A group of young contemporary Dutch designers was presented at the Salone del Mobile in Milan. Then Droog Design was founded. In 2004 the head office and the shop and gallery opened in Amsterdam. Since 2012, the building where Droog is currently located has been called Hôtel Droog, containing office space, design space, shop, café and a hotel room (One and Only Bedroom). Exhibitions are also organized.
At Droog, propagating a concept is more important than designing an aesthetic object. The designs often look for the essence of a subject and contain humorous elements. The objects comment on the world or tell a story. As a result, the boundary between applied and visual art is often broken. Droog shows that sober design does not have to be boring. The designers who work at Droog do not have a fixed style, but work from the same intention.
