Société Royale des Beaux-Arts

In the early nineteenth century, a need arose among young artists for a platform for exhibiting their work. They also wanted to exchange and discuss their ideas. This led to the creation of the Société des Arts de Gang in 1808, but was soon re-named the Société des Beaux-Arts de Gand. The purpose of the association was to promote the advancement of the arts and support artists. The association advocated artistic freedom with regard to style and subject matter. The Société promoted works of art, organized competitions and organized exhibitions. After 1877, there is no longer any trace of the Société.
