Information about the artist:
Gesner Abelard (Port-au-Prince, Haiti, February 22, 1922 - ??), painter and sculptor.
-Education: He worked as a car mechanic and then as a private detective before studying painting and sculpture at the 'Ecole Industrielle' in Port-au-Prince.
Abelard joined the Haitian 'Centre d'Art' in 1948.
In 1949, he received the bronze medal at an exhibition celebrating the 200th anniversary of the city of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti.
Many of his paintings depict lush foliage, birds, trees and scenes of Haitian life, and he is considered a naive artist.
It is believed that Abelard is now deceased, but no date or place of death is known.
His work has been exhibited worldwide, including at The Institute of Contemporary Arts in London and the NSU Art Museum in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
