Aloïs De Laet groeide op in het Antwerpse schipperskwartier waar hij het schilderen spontaan van buurtgenoten leerde. Als autodidact creëerde hij in zijn beginperiode weemoedige landschappen maar zijn werk evalueerde naar meer helder werk waardoor hij tot een belangrijk Belgisch luminist gerekend mag worden.
