Arie Berkulin (Gemert, 1939) is a well-known sculptor, painter, watercolourist and draughtsman who was trained at various practical training courses and the Academy for Industrial Design in Eindhoven. He himself taught for many years at the academies of Tilburg and Rotterdam. His early sculptures can be called exact, constructivist and also systematic. He later distanced himself from this so-called systematic method. Circle, triangle and square are fixed elements in his sculptures. According to him, his work is about spaces, shapes and masses. It is not so much the shapes as the areas in between that fascinate him. He tries to make do with less and less mass and volume.
Berjulin's work is included in the collections of, among others:
Museum Beelden aan Zee, Scheveningen, Museum Het Valkhof, Nijmegen, Noordbrabants Museum, Den Bosch, Zeeuws Museum, Middelburg, Stedelijk Museum, Schiedam and private collections such as that of ABNAMRO. In many larger and smaller cities his work can be viewed in public spaces. Various publications have appeared about his work and he has received several awards.
