Aristide Maillol was a sculptor, draftsman and painter, etcher and lithographer, medallist, woodcarver and tapestry designer. He studied painting in Perpignan and Paris, where he was advised to first receive a basic education at the Ecole des Arts-Décoratifs before being admitted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Paintings by Paul Gauguin and others made a great impression on him. Maillol joined Les Nabis, who tried to bring about innovation in painting.
His greatest talent, however, was not in painting; he began designing tapestries and started a carpet weaving workshop at home. He was forced to give this up due to an eye disease he had contracted from weaving. He returned to Paris and trained as a sculptor. First in terracotta, later in wood, clay and bronze. He made his first important sculpture in 1902, modelled after his wife, Clothilde.
Until the end of his life, Maillol remained faithful to traditional techniques and materials. Just like his theme: that of the female nude. Classical antiquity is an important source of inspiration, just like August Rodin. Once he had found his own neoclassical style, he hardly changed it. His sculptures are without exception smoothly polished. The massiveness of the forms does not hinder elegance, mobility and sensuality.
This also applies to La Rivière – edition epreuve d'exposition, one of Maillol's top works that was shown at ARTZUID in 2019. The female figure seems to meander, like the water in a river.
Maillol's works can be seen in major art museums and in public spaces. His sculptures can be found in many French cities, in Middelheim (Antwerp), Kröller-Müller (Otterlo) and Helmond.
Aristide Maillol died in 1944 as a result of a car accident.
