Arman (Nice, November 17, 1928 – New York, October 22, 2005), was a French-American painter and object artist. Just like the admired Vincent van Gogh, who signed only with his first name "Vincent", Armand Pierre Fernandez (as Arman was originally called) signed his work with his first first name "Armand". At the end of 1957 he decided to change that name to "Arman".
Between 1959 and 1962 Arman developed his recognizable style with two new concepts: the accumulation and the poubelle, which enjoyed great public interest:
The accumulation was a collection of ordinary, recognizable objects, which were completely identical and were contained in large numbers in a polyester or plexiglass housing. In 1959 he noticed a positive reaction from the public to his first accumulations and he began to see the power of this art expression. From 1962 he started welding the objects.
The poubelle was a collection of strewn rubbish. In 1960 he filled Galerie Iris Clert with garbage, creating Le Plein as a counterpoint to his friend Yves Klein's exhibition Le Vide from two years earlier in the same gallery.
In October 1960, Arman was closely involved in the founding of the artist group new realism (Nouveau réalisme) with Yves Klein, François Dufrêne, Raymond Hains, Martial Raysse, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely, Jacques Villeglé and the art critic/philosopher Pierre Restany. Later, César, Mimmo Rotella, Niki de Saint Phalle and Christo also joined the group.
