  • Arnout Colnot was a painter, graphic artist, draftsman and lithographer, largely self-taught. Between 1901 and 1907 he received his artistic training at the decoration studio of Jan Zondag.
He was one of the leaders of the Bergen School. This style is characterized by cubist influences and an expressionist touch. The painters did not consider it important to depict nature as it was, but to express the deeper feelings and moods that nature evoked in them. Colnot was mainly concerned with the Dutch polder landscape, he also made city and village views and still lifes, in powerful brown, green and gold colors. Arnout was one of the Amsterdam Limburgers who connected with Cobra's expressionism in the 1950s. From there he developed a dynamic, colorful and increasingly abstract painting in which the landscape is an important source of inspiration. In addition to paintings, he also creates monumental murals and designs costumes and sets. He lived from 1913 to 1932 in Bergen, North Holland, a place where many artists lived and worked in the style of the Bergen School at that time. From 1943 to 1969 he lived in Amsterdam. At the end of his life he lived again in Bergen. He has made several art trips, including to Bruges and Paris. He was a member of Arti et Amicitiae (Amsterdam) and the Sint Lucas Association. He is the teacher of Kees Boendermaker and Rinus Duin. He won several prizes during his career, including the Silver Medal at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937 and the Arti-médaille (Arti et Amicitiae) in 1948. He is the father of Gustaaf, Karel and Clara Colnot.
