The Sweetheart symbolised the street urchin of Amsterdam; always looking for mischief but with a heart of gold.
In the sixties, the statue sponsored by a cigarette factory became the target and meeting point of the "anti-smoking magician" Robert Jasper Grootveld and his followers. The Amsterdam police saw the happenings that were held around this statue as provocations.
The consequences of the sometimes heavy-handed reactions of the police led to provocations again, and thus the PROVO movement arose around the Lieverdje.
