Christiaan (Chris) le Roy (Deventer, March 21, 1884 – Nijmegen, May 13, 1969) was a Dutch painter and lithographer.[1].
Life and work
Chris le Roy was a son of Dr. Jacobus Johannes le Roy (1846-1931) and Willemijntje le Roy. His father was a teacher and later director of the RHBS in Deventer. Le Roy received his artistic education at the HBS of Bartus Korteling and Alexander Liernur. He was then educated at the Royal Military Academy in Breda and initially had a military career. During his time as corps commander (around 1919) in Leiden he received instructions from the painter Floris Verster. In 1924 Le Roy was declared unfit for professional service due to rheumatism. He then devoted himself to drawing and painting, with nature as his main motif. In 1926 he settled in Nijmegen. He was later appointed teacher at the Christian teacher training college in Zetten and was co-founder of the people's university in Doetinchem.

Le Roy painted, drew, watercoloured and lithographed landscapes, figures and interiors in a naturalistic-impressionistic style.[2] He also designed a number of stained glass windows. Le Roy became nationally known for his drawings and lithographs of flowers, plants and animals for the biographical calendars that were published from 1924 onwards. He was a member of Sint Lucas, Arti et Amicitiae and the Pulchri Studio and exhibited several times.

Le Roy died in 1969, at the age of 85.
