Christophe van der Windt (Brussels, August 22, 1877 - Leiden, February 7, 1952) was a Dutch painter. Van der Windt is counted among the Leiden Impressionists, a group of painters also referred to as the Leiden School. Other Leiden Impressionists are: Arend Jan van Driesten, Willem van der Nat, Lucas Verkoren, Johannes Cornelis Roelandse and Alex Rosemeier. Several works by Chris van der Windt hang in the Stedelijk Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden. Belgian/Dutch, Sint-Jans-Molenbeek 1877 – 1952 Leiden. Chris van der Windt was born in Belgium as the son of a half Dutch half Belgian father and a Dutch mother. When his father dies at the age of forty, Van der Windt is only five, he moves with his mother and his two younger brothers to Leiden, the city where his mother was born. There his mother rents a house and a bleaching shop to support her family as a washerwoman. Already at primary school it becomes clear that Van der Windt has a talent for drawing. For a penny or pencil he sells his drawings to the master and classmates. Therefore, he later goes to trade school to learn the profession of a house painter. He also follows a course in ornamental drawing. In the period from 1894 to 1897 he worked as a house painter. In Leiden he also takes lessons at the drawing school of Wilhelm Johan Lampe. In 1898 and 1899 he works as an apprentice with the well-known decorative painter Pieter Johannes Niesten. At that time he painted a lot for the Stadsgehoorzaal and the Schouwburg in Leiden. In 1900 Van der Windt decides to continue as an independent artist. Although he had no academic training as a painter, Van der Windt soon developed a good, individual style and great technical skills. He not only becomes a skilled painter in oils, but also in the technically difficult watercolours. In the style of the Hague School he paints landscapes, farms and farmyards in the surroundings of Leiden, Stompwijk, Zoeterwoude, Zoetermeer, Noordwijkerhout, Nootdorp, Rijnsburg, Zegwaard and Katwijk. He often goes out to paint with painter friends, from five in the morning until late at night. He spends a lot of time with the Leiden painters Arend Jan van Driesten and Alexander Rosemeier, friends for life. His still lifes form a separate group within Van der Windt's oeuvre. "His use of color in his landscapes and farmyards has been kept sober, entirely in the tradition of the Hague School, with many shades of grey, brown and green". Within a few years, Van der Windt's talent was discovered by the art dealers. In the period from 1903 to 1917 he sold a lot through the renowned art dealers Boussod and Valadon & Cie in The Hague. Not all of his work stays in the Netherlands. Many are sold to Great Britain, America and Canada. At Boussod and Valadon he meets renowned Hague School painters such as Willem Maris and Willem Bastiaan Tholen, who appreciate his work very much. In 1907, the famous Jozef Israels even asked Van der Windt if he wanted to become a member of the prestigious 'Hollandsche Teekenmaatschappij', a great honor at the time. Van der Windt sees the prices for his work rise during this period and can make a good living. After Boussod en Valadon was dissolved in 1917, he mainly sold his work through the well-known art dealer and frame maker Sala, which has branches in Leiden and The Hague.
