Ciano Siewert lives and works(ed) in Rotterdam, Utrecht and Sydney, Australia. Ciano specializes in watercolors and lithographs and became especially known for his real Dutch city and landscape views. The ports of Rotterdam have always been an important source of inspiration for him. He uses his own photos as the basis for his work. Images of the typical Dutch landscape have been known since the seventeenth century and are used time and again as the subject for a painting or drawing.
Yet he creates something completely new and unique in this area. He claims to have been working in his own style for years, a style he has been using since he was thirteen. His watercolors are of
an unprecedented level of detail and directness. Although the technique of watercolor painting quickly brings to mind lovely colors and flowing lines and surfaces, Ciano's work consists of straight lines and bright colors.
He is a student of the Academy for BK in Rotterdam and the Academy of Arts, Sydney (Aus), the Graphic studio Lublin Inc. in New York and of the painters A. Glansdorp and Wim Zwiers. He is a very well-known and renowned contemporary painter and watercolourist. He paints in the style of impressionistic realism, landscapes, village and cityscapes, portraits and seascapes, in which the effect of the high horizons is particularly striking.
Ciano Siewert's work stands out because of the typically Dutch clarity and virtuoso technique with which he creates his landscapes, cityscapes and harbour views.
His fascination goes out to both the old and the new, where it is mainly about the form of the subject. Industrial forms, the architecture of houses, buildings and ships continue to fascinate him.
After years of working mainly in watercolour technique, Siewert has been painting exclusively in oil paint since 2002. During his Rotterdam period - with intermittent stays in New York - Siewert immortalised the industry and harbours in their many forms and shapes. Since living in Utrecht, he has also focused more on the rural (not to be confused with picturesque) and the small-town.
Ciano Siewert took and takes part in various (group and solo) exhibitions (among others in Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam, Utrecht and Laren). He is a member of the artists' association BBK Amsterdam. His work is included in various private, corporate and government collections, including the renowned collection of the ING Bank in Amsterdam.
