Bijzonder werk van de Nederlandse schilder Dirk Filarski. Filarski werd geboren in Amsterdam, maar werd later onderdeel van de Bergense school. Hij volgde zijn opleiding aan de Rijksschool voor Kunstnijverheid in zijn geboorteplaats Amsterdam. Tijdens deze periode ontstonden er hechte vriendschappen met andere kunstenaars zoals Arnout Colnot, Tjerk Bottema, Matthieu Wiegman en Dirk Smorenberg. Met die laatste reisde hij in 1912 af naar Zwitserland, waar hij en Smorenberg een aantal berglandschappen schilderden met een krachtig kleurgebruik.
Tijdens zijn leven ontwikkelde Filarski zicht tot een zeer bereisd kunstenaar. Hij trok door heel Europa, onder andere door Zwitserland, Italië, Spanje en Frankrijk. Van hem is bekend dat hij in 1932 en 1933 verbleef in Venetië. Het desbetreffende schilderij, waar de Scuola Grande di San Marco in Venetië te zien is, moet uit deze periode stammen. Dit is ook terug te zien in het zachtere kleurgebruik, dat Filarski pas in een later stadium toepaste op zijn oeuvre.
