Evert Rahms was born on 14 September 1823 in Rotterdam as the son of a baker. He took drawing lessons but when his father died, he had to take over the bakery. In 1850 he married Johanna Buys from Oudewater and four years later he was able to take over the bakery in the building Leeuweringerstraat 40. In Oudewater Rahms immediately started drawing: the gates that would be demolished shortly afterwards, street scenes, the mills along the Damweg.
