Elchanon Leonardus Verveer (1826-1900) was a Dutch painter and graphic artist. He is counted among the romantics.
Verveer was born into a Jewish family in The Hague. He first went to the Hague Wood Engraver School and started as a graphic artist. Later he took lessons at the Hague Academy of Art. There he was taught by his older brother Samuel and Herman te Kate. He also briefly studied in Brussels. In 1857 and 1859 he traveled to Paris.
Verveer painted genre works, often with the Dutch fisherman's life as the theme, usually in Scheveningen, by the sea and beach. He worked in the romantic style, clearly showing the influence of Jozef Israels.
In 2015, a retrospective of Verveer's work was held in the Jewish Historical Museum.
