Erwin Bechthold genoot op jonge leeftijd een opleiding tot drukker en letterzetter.
Van 1950 tot 1951 volgde hij de schilderschool van Fernand Leger in Parijs.
Bechtold nam deel aan de Documenta 1968 in Kassel.
Hij geldt als mede-oprichter van de op Ibiza ontstane kunstenaarsgroep Grupo Ibiza 59.
Sinds 1990 bekleedt hij een eredoctoraat aan ‘des Landes Baden-Württemberg’.
