In 1977, graphic artist Flip van der Burgt (1927-1977) died as a result of an incurable disease. When asked before his death whether he was disappointed that he had lived only 'such a short time', he replied: 'I lived intensely and as an artist I was allowed to say a lot. More important people than me only lived to be 33.' The 'Stichting Vrienden van Flip van der Burgt' published a booklet for which Nicole van der Schaaf and Wil Zaal wrote the texts. By far the largest part of the publication is filled with woodcuts from a series entitled 'Bible black/white' (1965). Van der Burgt preferred to work in black and white. The titles of his work often refer to the Bible, they are usually ironic, e.g. 'Dan maar geen paradijs' or 'God doet somsvreemd dingen'. Van der Burgt was the soul behind 'Werking', later 'Graphil', an organisation that organised exhibitions, discussions, actions and also two book publications in a committed manner.
