Biography:
The painter Frits J. Goosen is one of the leading impressionist painters of the moment. He drew and painted at a young age and was regularly allowed to take a look in the studio of the painter Stephen Kip who lived near him. The financial situation at home did not allow an education in that direction. After his school days he fulfilled his military service as a signalman in the navy. Frits Goosen then joined the barge company O. Hansen & Zn. in Amsterdam where he worked for 11 years. Drawing and painting remained his great passion and in 1976 he took the plunge and became a professional painter. Frits then first worked for painter and art dealer Hans van Moerkerken in Weesp for 3.5 years. Van Moerkerken gave him instructions and taught him the painting trade. Frits Goosen is a painter par excellence of rivers and harbours with ships. In addition to landscapes, harbour and cityscapes, ship portraits take up a large part of Frits Goosen's oeuvre. From the beginning of his painting career, his passion for sailing can be found in his work. The ships of the brown fleet and charter sailing in particular are the main subjects in his paintings. He regularly takes part in sailing competitions with these ships. The SAIL event in Amsterdam is also rarely missed. The basis for the paintings is formed by drawings, watercolours and photos that Frits Goosen makes on location. In the studio, an oil painting is made of this, aided by his imagination and photographic memory. In addition, his extensive knowledge of trees, cattle and the technical aspects of ships is an essential part of perfecting the painting. Frits Goosen knows almost all charter ships by name and knows the differences between the ships in detail.
