Gretha Pieck (1898-1920) A great talent nipped in the bud.
Gretha Pieck was a Dutch draftsman and graphic artist and much less known than Jan Mankes. Yet this beautiful, young woman died barely a month before Jan Mankes and not only lived to be 30 years old, but died of the Spanish Flu at the age of 21. This in contrast to her sister Adri (1894-1982), who became a painter and almost reached her 88th birthday. Indeed: both first cousins of Henri and Anton Pieck. But it is as Adri used to say when asked if she was related to 'the Pieck': “Yes, a daughter” and then she simply meant her own father Anton F. Pieck.
Gretha Peak Amsterdam 10-08-1898 – Maartensdijk 31-03-1920
Margaretha (Gretha) Pieck was a Dutch graphic artist and draftsman. Gretha was a daughter of Antonie Franciscus Pieck and Elisabeth Maria Margaretha Binnendijk. Her father was a head teacher, writer and amateur painter. Gretha was a sister of Adri Pieck and a first cousin of Anton and Henri Pieck. She probably received her first drawing lessons from her father and then from Willem Knip and Toon de Jong. She drew and made etchings and woodcuts of animals, still lifes, landscapes and portraits. Gretha Pieck was a member of the Sint Lucas Artists Association. She exhibited several times, including at home with sister Adri in Bussum and with cousin Anton at an art exhibition in Berg en Dal (1918). Gretha moved to Maartensdijk in 1919, where she died of the Spanish flu a year later.
