Han (Johannis) Jansen (1931-1994) Born in Kloosterburen 1931 and died in Nieuw Loosdrecht 1994. Education: Han Jansen grew up in the province of Groningen and is a self-taught artist. Became known in the 1970s with landscapes (mostly silkscreen prints), furnished with cows and farms, in a surrealistic clear, highly abstracted style. He was a member of the Groningen artists' collective "De Ploeg", founded in 1918. He made silkscreen prints, etchings, drawings, photos, paintings and sculptures. He attracted international attention in the early 1980s by 'painting' the Wadden Sea itself. He colored the Wadden water by letting (environmentally friendly) paint flow into it, which was spread by the tide. The activity was broadcast on Dutch television. Jansen subsequently produced large, abstract canvases with 'mists' of paint splashes. For fifteen years, his paintings graced the covers of the idiosyncratic northern magazine Noorderbreedte; a special platform for an artist.
