  • Hans Kanters was born in 1947 in Amsterdam. He has been painting since 1967, lithographing since 1986 and sculpting since 1994. Kanters is self-taught. He has worked in the Netherlands, southern Spain, Formentera, southern France and since 1993 in Ibiza. Hans Kanters' work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Greece, America and Japan in various galleries and art fairs. His work is in collections in these countries. The Museum Jan van der Togt in Amstelveen has a permanent collection of Kanters' paintings. A solo exhibition was on display in this museum from 29 November 2012 to 13 January 2013. "People should be able to get more out of it than I put into it, otherwise I have failed. It is not just about the meaning, it is also the feeling, the humour and the irony, the tenderness and the frustration, even the anger that I try to convey." Kanters' work cannot be described in a short space. What can be said is that the bizarre, fascinating representations with their dozens of details depict life in all gradations of emotion, behaviour and social forms. And that at an astonishingly high technical level. Over the years, Kanters has always gone his own way as an autodidact, has not been bothered by trends or fashions, but has remained who he was. After his erotic period in the seventies, surrealism has been strongly expressed in his work since the eighties and his palette has become more direct and thinner in colour. In addition to his graphic work such as lithographs and etchings, he has been making bronze sculptures since 1994.
