HR Giger was a Swiss painter, sculptor and designer whose surrealist influences and darkly futuristic visions informed his signature biomechanical aesthetic. Giger gained international recognition in the 1960s with his airbrushed depictions of post-apocalyptic creatures and oppressive landscapes. His worldwide breakthrough came however, through his work in Hollywood, where he became best known as the designer of the iconic Xenomorph in Alien – a creation that earned him the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
