  • Born in Amsterdam in 1931 (died in 1987), Hans van Draanen experienced the war period there in his teens, which probably influenced his entire life. Many artists lived and worked in and around the canal house on Brouwersgracht. In that period, the painter and poet Lucebert often visited his parents and poems were regularly recited when people were not working in the studio. At that time, Hans was training at the Institute for Applied Arts in Amsterdam, which later became the Rietveld Academy.

In the biography (ISBN 9789082437102) about Hans van Draanen, it appears that the duality that emerges from the above saying gives a nice picture of his character. This ambivalence is also reflected in the stories of his family and friends, who together paint a picture of a charming, playful, compelling, generous and eager man with a roaring smile and a heart of gold, but also of a selfish man with a sometimes jealous and dark side. But everyone agrees on one thing: Hans was a unique artist with a great interest in and knowledge of ancient culture, modern art, literature and music. And although he may have become best known as an etcher, the paintings are also very intriguing. The chronological overview at the back of the book clearly shows how many styles he mastered and with how much pleasure he put his playful, fantastic, surrealistic and sometimes lovely figures on canvas.
