Hans Wap always creates his images in a certain order. First, Wap paints an abstract image. Then he adds human figures to the composition. The figures in the paintings are somewhat more pronounced than before. The abstract image has in fact become autonomous. The use of chance cannot be called a coincidence. After the human figure has been added, a landscape is created; the abstraction has become figuration.
Wap is known for his silkscreen prints with anecdotal images, like those of a cartoon. The images are as absurd as a storm in a teacup. Often the proportions are off: a sailboat sails on a kitchen table, or an airplane crashes into a chair leg. In this period the image has an anecdotal character, like that of a cartoon. Tightly drawn and impeccably colored. His linocuts from the period after that are less illustrative. Almost abstract, but because he can't help it, often with a figurative element.
