About the book: Stowe responded to her critics by writing The Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin. The book was published to document the accuracy of the portrayal of slavery in Stowe's anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852). The book also provides insight into Stowe's own views on slavery.
After the publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin, Southerners accused Stowe of misrepresenting slavery. To show that she had neither a song about slavery nor exaggerated the plight of enslaved people, she composed A Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin.
The book was subtitled 'Presentation of the original facts and documents on which the story is based, together with supporting statements verifying the truth of the work'. In The Key, Stowe pointed out people who inspired her characters and events. She hoped that identifying these sources would show that her novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was based on fact. An English review of the publication from 1853 called it a "wonderful book, if possible even more so than Uncle Tom's." Hut itself” (The Eclectic Review 4 (May 1853).
Uncle Tom's Cabin is one of the best-known books in the canon of American literature and an indictment against slavery. It was published in 1852 after first appearing as a serial between 1851 and 1852. The novel describes the fate of a number of slaves and how they suffered under slavery. The book acknowledges that many masters treat their slaves well, but these slaves are at risk of being sold (due to lack of money or death of the owner) to bad masters, often separating parents and children.
Beecher Stowe wrote the novel out of dissatisfaction with the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, which made the extradition of escaped slaves to their owners more coercive. She used royalties from it to help organize a petition against the Kansas-Nebraska Act. The work influenced prevailing views on slavery.
