Harry Koolen was born in Meerssen (south Limburg) and graduated from the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam at a young age. After this study he returned to his native region where he had a studio in the castle of Terworm. In 1945 he exhibited in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Harry was a versatile artist who made murals for Brand brewery in Wylre, the abbey in Middelburg and the air force staff building in The Hague. Around 1958 he also documented miners' lives with pen and brush and immortalized countless religious subjects. This impressionist painting was made during one of his study trips to France. It is a work on linen glued to board.
