Harry Koolen was born in Meerssen (South Limburg) and graduated from the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam at a young age. After this study he returned to his native region where he held a studio in the castle of Terworm. In 1945 he exhibited in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Harry was a versatile artist who, among other things, made wall paintings for the Brand brewery in Wylre, the abbey in Middelburg and the building of the air force staff in The Hague. He also documented miners' life around 1958 with pen and brush and immortalized countless religious subjects. This impressionist painting was made during one of his study trips to France.
