Biography:
Hendrik Kranenburg (1917-1997) lived and worked in Amsterdam before settling in Laren in 1943. He studied at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam (1938-1942) under the direction of JH Jurres and WH van de Berg. He won a prize for portrait painting and a grant from the Davidsfonds (Arti and Amicitiae in Amsterdam). Kranenburg drew (pen and pastel), etched and lithographed. He is best known for his oil paintings. They were usually vast landscapes, monumental with a rich colour palette. The paint was applied thickly to the canvas with coarse pen strokes, which often made a more than one-dimensional impression. His style was very similar to the painter WGF Jansen, whom he greatly admired.
