Roodenburg was a painter and etcher. He learned the trade from graphic artist Philippe Zilcken. Roodenburg was best known for its cityscapes of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht, among others. In the 1960s, people could save up for a coffee and breakfast set from Villeroy & Boch at Nutroma. Roodenburg's black-and-white drawings of Amsterdam cityscapes were depicted on the tableware.

Roodenburg was a member of leading artists' associations, such as Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam and Pulchri Studio in The Hague. The book HE Roodenburg (1895-1987): topographical etcher provides an almost complete overview of Roodenburg's graphic work.
