Information about the artist: Hendrik ('Henk') Pieter Pander (Haarlem, November 21, 1937 – April 7, 2023, Portland, Oregon USA), painter, etcher, draftsman, watercolorist and maker of gouaches. -Education: Institute for Applied Arts Education Amsterdam and the State Academy of Fine Arts Amsterdam (1956-1961). He is the son of the artist Jaap Pander (1911-1962) and the brother of the artist Arnold Pander (1941). Henk Pander emigrated to Portland (Oregon, United States) in 1965. There he made a name for himself with his drawings, watercolors and oil paintings. In his works he depicted subjects ranging from the death of friends to erotic fantasies, from the wreck of the New Carissa to the ruins of Ground Zero 9/11, and from the skylines of Portland and Amsterdam to abandoned airplanes and cars. From a review by Bob Hicks, Oregon Arts Watch: "During his nearly sixty years in Oregon, Pander produced a prodigious amount of challenging, often raw and provocative, but also beautiful work. The inspiration for this came from his thorough classical training in the Netherlands, his childhood experiences under Nazi occupation during World War II, and his reactions to his immigrant life in the United States, where he felt himself at once a keen cultural observer and a restless outsider."
