Henri Mélis was born on 1 September 1845 in Sas van Gent. His parents came from Belgium. In 1852 the family moved to Rotterdam where they lived at different addresses. In Rotterdam he attended the Academy of Fine Arts. He left the academy prematurely to develop himself through self-study. It is known that he won several prizes in different categories in 1859 and 1866. Later he became a teacher at this Academy. In 1865 he qualified as a drawing teacher. In 1871 he moved to The Hague where he lived and worked in Scheveningen. In 1880 he returned to Rotterdam and in 1884 he settled permanently in the village of Charlois near Rotterdam.
