Holger Bunk - U. (abbreviation of model name)

This picture from 1982 with the title "U."shows a model of the painter Holger Bunk reading. The title U. is the abbreviation of the young woman's name. This picture is a good, early example of how Bunk builds up his motifs both in drawing and painting.

In 1982, the painter was still at the very beginning of his career in Düsseldorf, although his biography shows professional exhibitions in institutions and galleries since 1978. His last solo exhibitions with extensive catalogs took place in 2018 at the Kunsthalle Bielefeld and in 2022 at the Städtische Galerie Villingen-Schwenningen; another is announced for 2025.

This auction offer is therefore exceptional and rare, as works from Bunk's early period are rarely offered.

This painting - like many of Bunk's early paintings - is painted in very durable and lightfast tempera paints (casein tempera) on a coarse canvas mounted on a hardboard.
