Irene van den Bos is fascinated by the fragility and transience of life, and translates this into paintings of people, flowers and plants. She is also inspired by existing paintings, especially from the Golden Age. When she paints people, it is not in a classical realistic way, but she is guided by her intuition. She bases herself on photographs in newspapers or magazines that evoke an emotion or association in her. Spring and summer are her favorite seasons: the richness and the colors. In the Flora series she paints floral and plant motifs: for example, the shadows of plants on the floor of her studio when the sun shines in. That shadow then falls on the canvas and she paints. That has to be done quickly, because time passes or a cloud comes in front of the sun. Then the shadow is gone and then there is only the memory. With Irene van den Bos, the technique and the use of materials are always subordinate to the subject. The transparent layers of oil paint, pencil lines and flowing brushstrokes are not an end in themselves, but serve the message she wants to convey or the feeling she wants to capture in a painting.
