Typical Van Rossum work with strong light effect. The evening light falls through the old city gate with a view of the river Oude Maas with sailing ships and a view of the Zwijndrecht bank. It is a fresh work that gives a realistic picture of the inside of the city gate from around 1930/40.
Van Rossum lived and worked in The Hague and was an impressionist trained artist. He often painted landscapes, farms, (poultry) cattle and river, city and forest views. He was also a gifted draftsman and ester.

Dordrecht The Catharijne or Katrijnenpoort, built from natural stone, was to provide access to the Hooikade after the Maartensgat was dug. Along much of the city's waterfront was a city wall, complete with watchhouses and watchtowers. Visitors could only enter through entrances such as the Catharijnepoort. The gate is a simple gateway between embossed pilasters with an ornate hipped roof. Of the many city gates that Dordrecht knew, only this old monumental city gate and the Groothoofdspoort remain.
