Jacomijn the English (Breda, 1958)
Jacomijn den Engelsen is a visual artist. For the past fifteen years, she has mainly been making woodcuts, printed on paper or canvas. Her works are usually in colour and often on unusually large formats for graphic art. She finds her sources in the visual and physical experience of her immediate surroundings; the place where she lives and works, the people in her vicinity. She records observations and experiences by means of drawings and photography, to later develop them into woodcuts in the studio. An intense fascination for life and nature takes shape in her dealings with the soil around her house. Here, in a microcosm where all life processes take place in seclusion, she sows and grows the plants that play such an important role in her work. It is not a sentimental but an honest place: there is colour, light and dark, birds make their nests there. But there is also rot, gluttony, decay and carcasses. Absorbed in this environment and by following and studying what happens here, Den Engelsen has arrived at motifs with which she now works: the growth force from the light, the frozen moment, the moment of farewell. However, imagery is not the goal, nor is there any reference to vanitas symbolism. She does not read morality into the processes around her, perhaps rather the opposite. It is the presence of a nature that 'shows itself', free of values and detached from projections, that she wants to show with her work. And to get as close as possible to what is the core of how she sees and experiences.
