Oudezijdsvoorburgwal with the Old Church in the background. Johannes Coenraad (Jan) Bleijs, who worked under the name Jan Bleys (Hoorn, 11 December 1868 – Amsterdam, 17 August 1952) was a Dutch painter, draftsman and illustrator. He became known as co-founder of the Berger Kunsthandel.
Education and work
Portrait of Pierre Cuypers, by Jan Bleys. From De Telegraaf, Saturday 14 March 1903. Bleys studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. In 1903 he moved to Bergen. With Hendrik van Bloem, Johannes Graadt van Roggen and Gerrit van der Hoef among others he founded the Berger Kunsthandel in 1907. From 1 May 1907 to 1 May 1909 he was secretary of this association.
In 1925 Bleys moved to Amsterdam, where he was a member of the association Arti et Amicitiae.
Bleys painted and drew figure pieces, Christian religious scenes, landscapes and flower still lifes. He also illustrated books and magazines and drew portraits for De Telegraaf. Picture postcards were also published with his drawings. In 1909 he exhibited his regent piece for the Huis van Achten in the Berger Kunsthandel.
