Information about the artist: Jan Wilhelm Makkes , (Amsterdam, June 17, 1935 – Heemstede, January 13, 1999), painter, draftsman and teacher. -Education: At school Jan was a difficult and rebellious student. Eventually he decided to go to the Quellinus School of Applied Arts in Amsterdam. He did not last long there. He received his education at the Rijksmuseum, where he was admitted without an entrance exam, based on his folder of drawings. Here he was taught by Jan van Tongeren. He was then admitted to the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten (1956-1958). In the fifties Jan Makkes made study trips to France and England and organised his first sales exhibitions in Santpoort. He developed a modern style; painted quickly, sometimes almost furiously, at the same time purely elaborated and atmospheric, with bright colours, modern but warm. Makkes used many aggressive colours, a lot of red, his brush flew over the canvas, from bottom left to top right. Yet he eventually brought harmony to his work. All exuberance remained within the boundaries of the composition. Makkes was not a dry painter, he used a lot of paint to apply the finishing touch with the palette knife in the final phase. -In the 1950s, painter and draughtsman Eppo Doeve (1907-1981) encouraged Jan Makkes to record the construction of the Velsertunnel under the North Sea Canal in a drawing. This became the impetus for many drawings and paintings that Makkes made in the following years of road and hydraulic engineering, including the Delta Works. His drawings found their way into many daily and weekly newspapers. Paintings of works under construction can be found in many boardrooms of offices and factories. The 'Museum Farm Jan Makkes' is located in Velserbroek. (source: RKD)
