A great Dutch master artist, who unfortunately only turned 31 years old. His entire oeuvre, which was created between 1907 and 1918, comprises about 150 paintings, mostly in small formats, about 100 drawings and more than 40 sheets of graphics, mainly etchings and woodcuts.
Jan Mankes entered art history as “Holland's most tranquil painter”. He died young of tuberculosis, something that has contributed to the myth-building surrounding his artistry.
