Jan Mankes (15 August 1889 – 23 April 1920) was a notable Dutch painter known for his detailed and restrained artistic style. Born in Meppel, he produced around 200 paintings, 100 drawings, and 50 prints before his untimely death from tuberculosis at the age of 30. His works often featured self-portraits, landscapes, and studies of birds and animals, reflecting his deep appreciation for nature. His paintings are characterized by a unique glazing technique that imbues them with a dreamlike quality, and his subjects often convey a search for truth and spiritual expression
