Jan Meijer left Assen for France in 1949 never to return. Just before, he had exhibited with his (fellow) team members J.Dijkstra and J.Wiegers. At the time, however, his abstract work was not appreciated by the people of Groningen. This is in contrast to the French notables, where his work was in great demand. In 1953 Meijer's work was again exhibited in the Netherlands in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. His work has since been included in many museum collections. The Assen museum has a collection of the painter. The work shown fits into the painter's "Ecole de Paris" period
