Jan Schonk volgde lessen aan de Academie voor
Beeldende Kunst en Technische Wetenschappen te Rotterdam.
Eerst werkend als vrij kunstenaar was hij van 1925 tot 1930
free lance ontwerper bij
plateelbakkerij Zuid holland. Ontwierp van 1926 tot 1930 gebruiksaardewerk,
vazen en potten, (dier)plastieken en relief-tegels voor Zuid-Holland. Hierna
ontwierp hij enkele dierplastieken voor Ivora. Was daarna alleen als graficus
werkzaam.
Na 1931 wijdde Schonk zich volledig aan de grafische kunst die vooral opvalt door zijn drang om massa's,
vlakken, lijnen en vormen, tot ritmische akkoorden te komponeren. Met zijn houtsnedes, litho's
en etsen is
Schonk één van de belangrijkste grafische kunstenaars van de 20ste eeuw.
