Jeroen Aart Krabbé (Amsterdam, December 5, 1944) is a Dutch actor, film director, painter and illustrator.

Biography

Family and early years

Jeroen Krabbé was born into an artistic family. His father Maarten Krabbé and grandfather Hendrik Maarten Krabbé were well-known painters, just as his middle son Jasper Krabbé is now. His mother, Margreet Reiss, was a writer and translator of film texts. His older brother Tim Krabbé is a writer (and chess player). His half-brother Mirko Krabbé is a multimedia artist/designer. Jeroen's eldest son, Martijn Krabbé, also entered the media world as a presenter of well-known television and radio programs such as The Voice.

After studying at the art academy for a year, Jeroen was admitted to the Amsterdam drama academy at the age of seventeen. He graduated in 1965; in this exam year he was awarded the Top Naeff prize. From 1977–1981, Krabbé continued his studies at the art academy, taking lessons from, among others, the surrealist Melle Oldeboerrigter.

Krabbé's debut film was Cycling to the Moon, a Dutch film from 1963 by Jef van der Heyden.

Krabbé played important roles in two major film hits by Paul Verhoeven: Soldaat van Oranje (1977) and The Fourth Man (1983).

In 1985 Krabbé directed a stage adaptation of Anne Frank's diary. He also played a part in this as Anne's father, Otto Frank. On May 9, 1985, this performance was broadcast by TROS. To immerse themselves even better in their roles, all actors spent a night in the Secret Annex.

Krabbé also played in a few Hollywood films, with his debut Jumpin' Jack Flash (1986). However, Krabbé is best known internationally as an antagonistic villain, for example in: Prince of Tides (1991), The Fugitive (1993) and as the villain Georgi Koskov in the James Bond film The Living Daylights (1987). In The Fugitive, Krabbé was the villain Dr. Charles Nichols opposite Harrison Ford.

In 1998 Krabbé directed the film Left Luggage, based on the novella 2 suitcases vol by Carl Friedman, and in 2001 the film adaptation of Harry Mulisch's novel The Discovery of Heaven followed. Edwin de Vries wrote the screenplay for both films.

Success as a presenter

In September 2005 he presented the documentary series Alles theater for the AVRO, about the post-war history of Dutch theatre. For this he interviewed many actors, directors, writers and comedians. In 2007 he made a similar series about film history, All Film.

In 2014, Krabbé was back on stage for the first time in almost ten years in the play Vaslav. He played the role of Serge Diaghilev in it.

In 2015, Krabbé came up with a successful TV series Krabbé is looking for... Vincent van Gogh at AVROTROS. In 2017 he came up with a sequel about the life of Pablo Picasso, in 2018 about the life of Paul Gauguin and in 2020 about Marc Chagall directed by Richard den Dulk. With director Den Dulk, he goes into more detail in Krabbé after each episode on striking moments during the recordings.

Jeroen Krabbe in 1992

As a painter, Krabbé has mainly focused on landscape painting, although he has also painted a number of portraits and still lifes. His style, often characterized by bright colours, ranges from highly abstract to figurative, with influences from Impressionism noticeable. Krabbé has made various sketches at locations he visited as a film actor, including Ouarzazate in Morocco, Vanuatu and Indonesia. Krabbé collaborated with the Francis Kyle Galleries in London. His paintings were very successfully offered by Kyle to art-loving Englishmen, who now mainly got to know Krabbé as a painter. In 2008, Museum De Fundatie presented the exhibition Jeroen Krabbé, Painter – a retrospective (with an overview of Krabbé's entire oeuvre) at its location in Zwolle, Paleis aan de Blijmarkt. He was awarded the title of Brilliant Artist of the Year 2018.

Krabbé also illustrated books, such as the Cutback Cookbook: cookbook for the 1980s by Marjan Berk and Voor Alles stayed as it wasn't, a collection of poems by JH van Geemert (See bibliography).
