De Helmondse kunstenaar Jo Manders (1936-1995) genoot in de jaren '70 en '80 regionale bekendheid. Als docent verzorgde hij vele schilder -en tekencursussen en zijn werk was in de openbare ruimte te zien: zowel in het ziekenhuis als in het stadskantoor van Helmond hingen zijn schilderijen. In februari 1995 kwam een onverwacht en tragisch eind aan zijn leven. Jo Manders werd samen met zijn zus in hun woning om het leven gebracht.Zelf plakte de kunstenaar in 1979 de term illusionistisch realisme op het werk dat hij in dat jaar tentoonstelde in Eindhoven.
