Information about the artist:
Joseph Eduard Adolf (Jo) Spier (Zutphen, June 26, 1900 - Santa Fe, May 21, 1978) was a Dutch illustrator and binding designer who later emigrated to the United States.
-Education: National Institute for the Training of Drawing Teachers, the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten Amsterdam (1917) and Académie Cormon, Paris (1923-1924).
Between 1924 and 1939 Spier illustrated for the daily newspaper De Telegraaf. He also drew various commercials, for KLM and Peijnenburg, among others. Several books have also been published by him.
Because of his Jewish background, he spent the Second World War in various concentration camps.
In 1951 he emigrated with his family to the United States. In 1957 he received American citizenship. There he also became successful as an illustrator. Jo Spier continued to live in America until his death.
Spier illustrated more than a hundred books, including the popular 'Headpieces' by Godfried Bomans. Several collections of his drawings have also been published.
