Madonna and Child - woodcut on Japanese paper. Very nice woodcut, carved in pears - by Joan Collette. In passe partout. Signed in the lower left corner of the block. dim. W.32.5 X H. 48 cm, sight size W. 18 X H. 30 cm. In good condition. Woodcuts are often cut in longitudinal wood. This requires a lot of craftsmanship, among other things because cutting in different directions differs in resistance. Cutting in the direction of the wood grain is easier than cutting across the grain. In the "Japanese woodcuts" much use is made of wood from the "Katsura tree" (Japanese Judas-Tree) Johan Nicolaas Collette was born in Delft in 1889 and attended the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. From 1915 to 1924 he lived and worked in Blaricum. He painted, drew and made watercolors and posters. In 1924 he moved to Roermond, where he worked as a monumental designer in Cuypers' studio. He made his contribution in about forty churches. In 1928 he moved to Nijmegen where he became friends with Jan Toorop and was able to continue his work in the church field. In addition to paintings, he also made woodcuts and illustrations.
