Biography:
Scherrewitz, Johan Frederik Cornelis was born on 18 March 1868 in Amsterdam. Initially, the intention was for him to work fulltime in his father's securities business, but with some resistance he was given permission to take painting and drawing lessons on Sunday mornings with drawing teacher Velsen. Later he was also a pupil of GJH Poggenbeek and painted and drew mainly landscapes with cattle and farm horses.
Perhaps drawing was in his blood, because his mother was of French descent and the genre painter Renou came from that family. His father realized that he would never become a good effects man and was given permission to go out with his painting box. He made hundreds of studies, among others in the Achterhoek, in Overijssel, Brabant and especially in Heeze and Leende where Jacob Ritsema also worked. Scherrewitz also made art trips to Germany and France, but the Dutch landscape appealed to him more. The quiet forests of the Lage Vuursche and Wolfheeze, the overgrown dunes along the North Sea, the heath with sheep, and the meadows with cows and horses. He sought the joy in nature and depicted this with elegant gestures, often with great accuracy. He lived and worked in Amsterdam until 1898, Laren until 1902, Haarlem 1902-1904 and then in Hilversum. Much of his work was exported to England and the US. He taught B. Fokker and J. Holtrup. He was a member of 'Arti et Amicitiae' in Amsterdam. He died in Hilversum on 9 August 1951.
