John Lie a Fo does not deny his origins; The South American atmosphere is clearly recognizable in his oeuvre. His use of color, human figures and animals breathe the nature in his surroundings in Suriname and French Guyana. In the Netherlands a well-known and beloved artist, who after his academic period in Antwerp and The Hague has had many exhibitions in the Netherlands.
John Lie A Fo was born in Suriname. After the December murders he left the country. He moved to French Guiana, but spends a lot of time in Europe. His work is often committed. Violence, and especially violence against a people, can trigger his anger. He calls his painting 'Cri du Maroni' his personal 'Guernica' (after Picasso's political masterpiece). The culture of the interior of 'the Guyanas' and the Caribbean culture in general encourage him to refer to it in his work. Within that larger context this 'serpent' is fairly restrained.
