Information about the artist:
Jean Jozef George Frans van Raaij / Raay , (Bergen op Zoom, February 16, 1898 – Zevenbergen, November 10, 1974) was a Dutch painter, draftsman and graphic artist (mainly etcher).
-Education: Academy of Visual Arts The Hague. Student of Albert Roelofs and Alphonse Stengelin, among others.
-He mainly made landscapes, figures, still lifes and portraits.
-Style: Impressionism.
Jozef van Raaij had a studio in Warmond called de Zonnebloem where he owned an etching press that was used by many artists who worked on the Kagerplassen. During the Second World War, a bomb fell on his studio, injuring him and causing the loss of much work. His etchings in particular are loved by art collectors. He was a member of the artists' association Ars Aemula Naturae in Leiden, the oldest association of visual artists in the Netherlands.
